Nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung war es das einzige Kampfflugzeug der Nationalen Volksarmee der DDR, das langfristig durch die Luftwaffe der Bundeswehr übernommen wurde. Die 24 Maschinen wurden zunächst im Erprobungsgeschwader MiG-29 (Preschen) getestet und ab 1994 durch das Jagdgeschwader 73 “Steinhoff” in Rostock-Laage geflogen. Die Maschinen dienten als Alarmrotten beim Air-Policing und als Übungsgegner für NATO-Partner. 2003/2004 wurden 22 der mittlerweile nach NATO-Standards umgerüsteten Flugzeuge an Polen übergeben. Eine Maschine (29+09) ist am 25.06.1996 bei einem Flugunfall verloren gegangen.
Die hier ausgestellte Maschine mit der Kennung 29+03 (NVA-Kennung 615) wurde im Jahr 2004 im JG 73 außer Dienst gestellt und nach einer Phase der Ersatzteilgewinnung 2006 an das Luftwaffenmuseum in Berlin-Gatow übergeben. Alle nach Polen zu überführenden Maschinen erhielten den Namenszug ihres letzten deutschen Piloten – anders als in den USA ein in Deutschland unübliches Verfahren. Am Cockpit dieser Maschine haben Soldaten des Geschwaders den Namenszug “OTL Michael ‚Micha’ Wegerich” angebracht. Oberstleutnant Wegerich ist ein ehemaliger NVA-Pilot, der in die Bundeswehr übernommen wurde und bis 1993 unter anderem diese Maschine flog.
Defense Minister Jaroslav Naď, emphasized the moral imperative of this action, stating, “We are doing the right thing.”
This donation was part of a carefully coordinated effort with Poland, Ukraine, and other allies.
