The B-21 Raider, the cutting-edge stealth bomber developed by Northrop Grumman, is advancing steadily through its flight test program.

As reported during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on May 8, 2024, Andrew Hunter, the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, remarked on the smooth progress of the program, saying, “We are in the flight test program, the flight test program is proceeding well.”

The B-21 is a digital marvel, designed to be the most advanced and stealthy bomber, a key asset to future U.S. military operations.

“It is doing what flight test programs are designed to do, which is helping us learn about the unique characteristics of this platform, but in a very, very effective way,” Hunter said.

Hunter elaborated that the B-21 represents a significant leap in digital technology, aligning closely with program requirements.

The B-21, characterized as a long-range, highly survivable stealth bomber, is poised to gradually replace the B-1 and B-2 bombers, playing a pivotal role in advancing national security objectives and providing reassurance to US allies and partners worldwide.

Manufactured under a contract with Northrop Grumman, the B-21 weapon system features an open systems architecture, facilitating swift integration of mature technologies to ensure continued effectiveness amid evolving threats. Anticipated to be operational in the mid-2020s, the program aims for a production target of at least 100 aircraft.

Managed by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office (AFRCO), the acquisition program prioritizes the construction of test aircraft that closely resemble production models.

Employing a departure from traditional flight prototype methods, B-21 test aircraft are constructed with mission systems using identical manufacturing processes and tooling as those employed for production, expediting the transition to full-scale production.

Upon its deployment, Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota is slated to become the initial main operating base for the B-21, housing the Formal Training Unit.

Whiteman AFB in Missouri and Dyess AFB in Texas are designated as preferred locations for additional bases, poised to receive aircraft as they become available.

The B-21’s modern design showcases advancements in stealth technology, with an open systems architecture that supports the rapid insertion of mature technologies.

This foresight allows the aircraft to evolve as threats do, ensuring its long-term effectiveness. Additionally, the B-21’s ability to manage its signature against both high-frequency engagement radar and lower-frequency surveillance radar further solidifies its position as the epitome of stealth technology.

The B-21 is not only a testament to the advances in military technology but also a crucial component of U.S. defense strategy.
