The naming ceremony of USS Pierre (LCS 38) signifies a pivotal moment in the journey of the newest Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship, signaling the shift from construction to rigorous sea trials and eventual operational deployment.

On May 17-18, 2024, at the Austal USA Shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, members of the maritime community, joined by esteemed local figures and naval delegates, gather to observe and honor the time-honored naval customs entwined with the christening of a vessel emblematic of technological advancement and unwavering dedication to maritime defense.

The USS Pierre, spanning an impressive 419 feet, showcases operational capabilities exceeding 46mph (40+ knots), embodying the essence of a modern combat vessel—highly agile, lethal, and adaptable.

Engineered for diverse missions such as mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, and surface warfare, LCS 38 epitomizes the forefront of naval technology and stands as a formidable asset for the United States Navy.

Since its keel-laying last summer, the development journey of USS Pierre has been a collaborative endeavor, propelled by the dedicated efforts of Austal USA and closely followed by the city it proudly represents.

Local leaders like Pierre Mayor Steve Harding, alongside influential figures such as South Dakota Senator John Thune, whose youngest daughter, Larissa Thune Hargens, serves as the ship’s distinguished sponsor, have demonstrated steadfast support for this maritime initiative.

The ceremonial proceedings draw attention to the successful operational track record of the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships.

It stands in contrast to the propulsion and weaponry issues faced by their Freedom-class counterparts.

Austal USA’s Independence-variant vessels, exemplified by the USS Pierre, underscore the organization’s commitment to surmounting technological hurdles and furnishing the Navy with dependable and versatile assets for warfare.

Joining a lineage of vessels honoring South Dakota’s capital city, the USS Pierre continues a tradition dating back to World War II.

It underscores the enduring bond between this landlocked state and its maritime namesakes.

This connection is further reinforced by the active involvement of South Dakota’s congressional representatives, who staunchly advocate for the shipbuilding industry and recognize its strategic significance.
