Following a grueling seven-month deployment, the USS Carney, a stalwart of the United States Navy, made its triumphant return to American shores.

The destroyer docked in Norfolk, Virginia, last Friday and is slated to continue to its home base at Naval Station Mayport, Florida.

This homecoming was no ordinary event, as it marked the end of a tenure characterized by intense and perilous confrontations at sea.

Throughout its deployment, the Carney participated in a substantial 51 encounters over the span of six months, most of which involved repelling aggressions from Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

These rebels had launched missile and drone strikes from Yemen targeting both commercial and military ships navigating the strategic waters of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

In a poignant statement, Franchetti lauded the valor and unwavering commitment of the Carney’s crew: “You saved lives, ensured the free flow of commerce, and stood up for the rules-based international order and all the values that we hold dear. It’s been eye-watering to watch.”

The vessel’s most notable battle occurred on October 19, when the Carney intercepted and neutralized a massive salvo from the Houthis, allegedly aimed at Israel. This action happened just one day after the destroyer entered the Middle East’s hotly contested waters of the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

This confrontation ignited a series of near-daily clashes between the Navy and Houthi forces, although the frequency of Houthi attacks has reportedly diminished in recent weeks.

Admiral Franchetti personally welcomed the Carney’s sailors, acknowledging their exceptional service during this arduous mission.

“It is absolutely wonderful to be onboard today and have the opportunity to welcome you back and give you a great big Bravo Zulu for a job incredibly well done,” she expressed during her visit to the ship on Friday.

The Carney’s journey began on September 27, initially operating alongside the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group. As operational dynamics evolved, it transitioned to the authority of the Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier strike group.

Throughout the deployment, the destroyer showcased the robustness and adaptability of the U.S. Navy in the face of emerging threats and strategic challenges.

During her address to the crew, Franchetti recognized 14 sailors who displayed outstanding prowess and dedication, contributing significantly to the Carney’s mission success.

The return of the USS Carney symbolizes more than the conclusion of a mission. It represents a resolute stance by the United States Navy in safeguarding international waters, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of global commerce, and upholding international norms amidst rising regional tensions.
