Air India Express has reinforced its fleet with the induction of two technologically advanced Boeing 737-8 aircraft, leased from AviLease, a company backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
This delivery marks the commencement of a significant fleet expansion, with four more 737-8s expected to join by the end of 2024.
Edward O’Byrne, CEO of AviLease, expressed his delight at the partnership.
“We are delighted to deliver the first two of six new Boeing 737-8 aircraft to Air India Express. Our partnership with Air India continues to strengthen under Tata Group ownership, and we are proud to support their fleet modernization program,” he stated.
These new aircraft are not only significant for Air India Express’s growth plans but are also aligned with AviLease’s mission.
AviLease plays a crucial role in fulfilling PIF’s objective of unlocking the potential of key sectors to facilitate the diversification of Saudi Arabia’s economy and bolster non-oil GDP growth.
Moreover, the company actively promotes a thriving aviation industry and fosters financial stability within the aviation ecosystem, aligning with the goals of Vision 2030.
Through its operations, AviLease is committed to creating local economic prospects and generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities for the Saudi Arabian community in the aviation and financial domains.
The recent delivery underscores AviLease’s rapid global expansion, as it continues to provide sustainable and efficient leasing and financing services to airlines worldwide.
The company’s significant role in expanding the Kingdom’s aviation ecosystem is evident, showcasing its commitment to driving growth and development in the sector.
The Boeing 737-8 models are lauded for their fuel efficiency, offering a 20% reduction in fuel use and emissions compared to older models.
Additionally, they contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing noise pollution by 50%.
Air India Express has also announced an interline arrangement with AirAsia India (AIX Connect), which is expected to enhance connectivity across its domestic and international network, offering over 100 routes served by a combined fleet of 56 aircraft.
However, the growth comes amidst scrutiny of the Boeing 737 MAX series following the missing “washer” in the rudder control system of one aircraft, which has since been rectified.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India stated that the required inspections were completed satisfactorily, with 39 of the 40 MAX-8 planes in service in India inspected for loose hardware.
