In the world of firearms, enthusiasts and experts alike are continuously evaluating the performance and design of rifles for a variety of applications, whether it be for hunting, tactical engagements, or competitive shooting. As we navigate the vast sea of firearm options, it becomes evident that not all rifles are created equal, and some stand out—either for their remarkable performance or for their regrettable deficiencies.

Recently, a gun enthusiast reported a list of five rifles that should be avoided due to various issues. These problematic firearms include the MAS 49/56, MAS 36, Armalite AR-180B, RAS 47, and Beretta CX4 Storm. Users have reported complications such as jamming, part failure, and design flaws that hinder the performance and reliability of these rifles. Potential buyers should take heed of these warnings as these issues could compromise the safety and effectiveness of the firearm in critical situations.

While some rifles fall short of expectations, others excel and garner recognition within the community. The Marlin 1895 SBL has impressively clinched the “2023 Rifle of the Year” award as announced by an official journal of the NRA. This acknowledgment comes after Ruger bought the Marlin brand and infused new life into the classic lever-gun designs. The 1895 SBL’s enhancements, such as the improved thread timing of the barrel with the receiver, a nickel-plated and spiral-fluted bolt, and a threaded muzzle, have significantly improved performance. In the field, its accuracy has been noted as “not just good for a lever-action—it shot well for a rifle of any kind,” and during testing, it demonstrated flawless action and an impressive follow-up shot readiness that left a lasting impression on the evaluators.

This resurgence of the Marlin lever guns under Ruger’s care emphasizes the importance of innovation and commitment to quality in the firearms industry. The impact is felt not just among traditionalists who appreciate the time-honored designs but also among modern shooters looking for reliable and high-performing rifles.

Of course, the firearms market is dynamic, and while the spotlight is currently on the Marlin 1895 SBL as the rifle of the year, numerous other rifles are in the queue, awaiting their turn for evaluation and possible acclaim. As new models are introduced and established ones are refined, enthusiasts will continue to witness a spectrum of rifles ranging from extraordinary values to premium, high-end offerings.
